Business Profile: L’il Bummers

Local Mom Designs Organic Diapers for L’il Bummers – A Natural Solution for Babies and the Environment

Annemarie Belanger, a small town mother of six, transformed her sewing hobby into an eBay success in 2007.  But before she could launch her L’il Bummers online store-front, she developed Transverse Myelitis, a debilitating illness that forced her to put her business plans on hold – but it did not dampen her determination.  By 2009, Belanger was back at work, selling the organic cotton diapers she designs and sews at home, made from the most renewable natural resource on the planet – bamboo – which is also the most absorbent material found in any cloth diaper today.

Belanger designed the diaper line after extensive research and trials to ensure they fitted as well as disposables and were as easy to use.  She tested various materials on babies for absorbency and softness.  Where the well-known diaper producers use synthetic materials, L’il Bummers diapers are made with pul and bamboo organic cotton fleece, which is natural, antibacterial, and 60% more absorbent than flannel.  As they are completely waterproof, there is no need for plastic pants.

“It took a long time to get the design and fabric right,” said Belanger. “It was important to me that our diapers would be a healthy alternative to disposables – for the babies and for our planet.  We found that the bamboo organic cotton was the perfect solution.  Plus, it’s 100% Canadian.”

After working with young families at the Early Years Centre in Cambridge, Belanger decided to start her own business when she moved to Woodstock.  With six children of her own, she was a natural expert on the subject of diapers.  L’il Bummers has given her the perfect blend to continue her work with young moms as she sews.

Belanger began designing and sewing Barbie doll clothes when she was only ten years old.  And by the time she was eleven, she was wearing her own designs to school.  Today, a large portion of her house has been converted into a production area – and she does not let her illness affect her work.  To keep up with demand, she has others help with cutting and sewing…but every diaper is finished by Belanger.

L’il Bummers are a slim-fitting diaper line available in various colours, each adjustable to fit a wide range of sizes.  Liners easily snap in place for quick changing and faster drying time.  L’il Bummers also sells mesh lined wet bags for travel and reusable wipes.  For more information, visit http://www.lilbummers.com/.
