Business Profile: Oakridge Counselling & Wellness Centre
After five years of working in a home based counselling practice, Elizabeth Lacey, owner of Oakridge Counselling & Wellness Centre has expanded to help her clients manage stress more effectively. Her vision of opening a full service wellness centre that combines counselling services with stress reduction programs, yoga, and registered massage therapy has been realized in the new 1200 square foot facility located at 759 Hyde Park Road, Unit 254, London, which opened in March 2009. An open house will be held Wednesday, September 16, 2009 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
For the past fifteen years, Lacey, a social worker/therapist and relationship specialist has worked with individuals, families, and couples in private practice, with Children’s Aid, and with Family Services Thames Valley. She has studied extensively in mindfulness meditation practices, marriage and family therapy, separation, divorce blended families and child custody, sexual abuse treatment with offenders and victims, mental illness, alcoholism, poverty, male socialization, and feminism.
Over the years, Lacey has made a name for herself amongst her colleagues as one who goes against the traditional mindset of therapy – by normalizing issues around mental health care and bringing a fresh viewpoint to their industry. Lacey strives to stand apart and it is benefiting her clients’ well being.
“After working with hundreds of individuals and couples over the years, it was clear that I spent a lot of time helping people unplug from the ‘busyness’ of their lives so they could reconnect with their core self – that is the part of them that feels silent and invisible,” said Lacey. “I often referred my clients to some type of physical body awareness practice, such as yoga, meditation, or massage therapy to reacquaint themselves with their bodies.”
When Lacey realized that her clients had difficulty managing the increased stress levels in their lives for themselves she obtained specialized training from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine to teach the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Programs developed by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. This eight-week group program combines yoga, meditation, and increased body/mind awareness to help students understand what stress is, how they experience it in their mind and body, and how they can work more skillfully with it to improve their quality of life. The results have been astounding as clients become more productive at work and improve their health and relationships.
“I needed more space to teach this group program so I knew it was time to make my dream a reality by opening a wellness centre to create a community where people could go to unplug, reconnect with their core self, and take care of themselves with like-minded individuals,” said Lacey. “Each service offered at the Centre was specifically chosen for its contributing benefits in the overall plan of wellness.”
Oakridge Counselling & Wellness Centre offers counselling services for individuals and couples, the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Program, registered massage therapy, and yoga classes in their in-house yoga studio led by well-known certified yoga instructor Catherine Heighway, Jennifer Epp, and Colleen Tiltman.
