Change is Good for You!
"A Flexible mind equals a flexible body."
Not adapting to change hurts you. I’m talking about any change. The inability to change direction for any reason hurts you. You’ll feel it in your shoulders and/or neck and/or elbows. Stiffness and pain in these areas indicate inflexibility not only in the body, but also in your mind.
If you’re used to following plans no matter what happens, even though, yes, in the big picture, it’s unimportant, you’ll end up creating more stress for yourself and causing physical manifestation of it in these body parts.
If you’re sitting around and getting all of these wonderful ideas and not acting on them, that’s also a resistance to change. Remember, you are responsible for your own success when you take responsibility for every thought you get, every feeling you feel, every decision you make, every action you take, and every result you receive.
It requires courage to accept and make change. But don’t look at it negatively. Whenever something negative happens to you, the positive is also making its way to you. Something good is about to happen – whether it looks like it at the time or not. It’s a call for you to change direction.
First, accept change, because it’s inevitable.
Let go. When you let go you realize you have no control over things that happen around you. When you can’t give up control over which you have no control, you get stressed and you don’t see the opportunities in front of you. Instead look for different alternatives that will give you the same results or outcome. Control what you can control. You’ll start doing this automatically as you get used to thinking this way.
Second, observe nature.
Nature is always changing. Whether it’s flowers popping out of the ground in the spring or a volcano erupting or she’s rocking with an earthquake, she’s constantly rebalancing and changing. We are actually witnessing changes that I studied about in geology classes as an engineering student, way back. A flood in Calgary, a few years ago, wiped out bridges and changed the meander of Fish Creek. We’re living in some VERY exciting times.
Have you ever seen the way animals adapt to change? Case in point, a dog loses a hind leg, but once that leg is removed, it continues to walk on just those 3 legs. Why does it do it? It does it because that’s just the way IT IS.
Third, start by being grateful.
Make a list of all the wonderful things you have and the wonderful people you have in your life. Go over that list several times a day. Certainly, I did when I had my first experience, as a self-sufficient adult, with a downturn in the economy in the early 1980s. I’ve thrived after each layoff by accepting change and instead looked at the positive that each negative event gave me, until I got to the point where in my last staff position many years ago, I stood up for what I believed and was fired for my efforts. When HR informed me that my services were no longer required, I smiled. That was a pivotal moment in my life. I had to leave in order to be hired by the best boss I ever had!
When you change the way you see your world, your world changes too. You suddenly see all the opportunities that are sitting right in front of you, all along. That’s why change is good.
