Networking…The Best Marketing Weapon in Tough Economic Times! Part Three
What Type of Events Are You Attending?
Research the type of events in your area. (A Google search helps or check out this site for a list of networking groups.) See what fits best for your business and don’t hesitate to check out service organizations such as Kiwanis, Lions Club and Rotary. Networking groups such as the Chamber, BNI groups, professional associations that are industry specific and don’t forget social groups like golf tournaments, fundraising events, and different associations in your area.
How can you get the best bang at a trade show or conference? These are great places to network and if you have a table or display be sure to give away a door prize so you can collect business cards for follow up. Follow up after a trade show must be done immediately as the leads go cold fast.
I just Googled my area and there were 5,140 networking groups! I’m sure you can find a fun group and one will likely attract the people you want to meet. The Chamber, for instance, gives a business directory of members so it is easy to look through the listing and research the companies you want to meet up with. You can check out their Web site and find out about their company so you can create a great conversation when you meet at the networking event.
Visit as many networking groups as possible that spark your interest. Notice the attitude of the group, the leadership and the support the members give to each other. You can visit networking groups as a guest before you need to join them.
Ask yourself what your goals are for participating in the networking meetings so that you will pick groups that will help you get what you are looking for. Set outcomes for the events that are specific (I will attend two networking meetings per week), measurable (put the events into your calendar and track your leads) and attainable (I will read articles on networking so I can enhance my networking skills).
