New Year's Resolutions Made Easy

It’s that time of year when you create a list of resolutions for 2011. The top resolution is usually that you resolve to keep these resolutions beyond January 30th.

Here is an easy way to create and remember resolutions. Thanks to Tom Ninness, a top mortgage broker in Colorado and head of Summit Champions. Tom created three questions for those he leads on a 90-day sales success journey.  Resolve to answer these questions.

In the New Year:

  1. What will you stop doing?
  2. What will you keep doing?
  3. What will you start doing?

For instance, perhaps you will stop checking your e-mail every 3.2 minutes. You'll stop cracking your Blackberry on the table when it doesn't show that anyone is texting or e-mailing you. Maybe you'll stop procrastinating by the end of January if not later.

When you answer, "What will you keep doing?" you might answer that you'll keep exercising, flossing and planning daily. Perhaps you'll keep calling your mother every Sunday, setting goals and paying down debt.

Your answers to "What will you start doing?" could be that you'll keep better records, eat less sugar, hire a coach, or read one frivolous book or serious tome monthly.

The idea is to prioritize your answers to each question and to pick just one action item for each question. While it may be admirable to have a long list of resolutions, it's more laudatory to actually follow through with one or two.

Ask yourself these three questions monthly as a review. Check in with yourself often to see where you are, where you're going, what roadblocks you face and how you'll get around them.
