At a networking luncheon last week, I spoke about the importance of defining your target market and thought I’d share a few points here. After all, if you don’t know who you are selling to, you will be wasting a lot of time – yours and your prospects.

To make your efforts worthwhile, you need to market to the group of people who are actively asking for, engaged in, and looking for solutions to their problem. And of course, you have the answer they are looking for.

If you’re having trouble attracting customers, first, think about the people you resonate with? Who do you most like to do business with and what type of clients do you naturally attract? Then think of your target market as one singular person and answer these questions:

  • Men or women?
  • Location? Where does he or she live?
  • Age?
  • Type of business?
  • What mind set?
  • How much money does he make?
  • What are his values?
  • What keeps her up at night (as it relates to you)?

By clearly understanding your market and what they are looking for, you can address their needs with emotion-based messages that will trigger a response.
